In her own words, Kayla describes the significance of the event, why it’s important to talk about childhood cancer, and how she’s looking forward to doing even more for kids with cancer. A Note from Kayla My event was a sporting clay event held on September 14, 2019 at Old Hudson Plantation. A lot of you may even just be wondering what a sporting clay is. A sporting clay is an orange, circular target that you shoot at. This fundraiser was a competition competed by solo teams and teams of two to four people. You compete as a group and as individuals to see who can break (hit) the most targets. Considering that this was the first year...

Rally Kid Keren Shares Her Journey with Cancer and How She Stays Positive

“It was the worst day of my life,” Rally Kid Keren said of the day she was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, a cancerous tumor that occurs in soft tissue. And in the days, weeks, and months that followed, her journey with cancer wasn’t going to get any easier. It all started when Keren developed a growth on her foot. After numerous doctor visits, she finally received the news no child or family wants to hear: It was cancer. The following Monday after her diagnosis, she began the long journey of treatment, which included chemotherapy, surgeries, and ultimately, the amputation of her leg. Cancer impacted Keren’s life in countless ways. As an active young girl, she could no longer swim and play soccer. Countless days spent in the hospital meant missing out on school and friends. But she never expected cancer to impact her family in such a life-altering way. “I never thought I’d get cancer...

Shopping For a Cause: How Dress Up Raised Money for Rally Foundation

If you love keeping up with the latest trends, you probably enjoy shopping for new styles at your favorite clothing stores. But what if those shopping trips could make a difference in the lives of others? What if your purchase could help raise funds for childhood cancer research? This past September, the southeast-based boutique Dress Up did exactly that. For 24 hours, they turned a day of shopping into a day of giving back by donating 10 percent of all sales to Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research. The donations included sales from all 19 stores in Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Alabama, as well as all online sales within that time frame. Rally Kids from Atlanta and Nashville attended the event. In just one day, Dress Up’s initiative raised $5,200 from customer sales. The boutique’s generous owners, Danielle and Derrick Case, chipped in as well, bringing the grand...

Vincristine: Controlled Distribution

First, thank you to all the families who reached out and shared your children’s stories with us. Thank you, 11 Alive and reporter Kaitlyn Ross in Atlanta and NBC Nightly News, for reporting on the shortage. These news stories along with others are key to raising awareness. Below is a link to the webinar that the Alliance for Childhood Cancer, of which Rally belongs to, and CAC2 with Dr. Peter Adamson, Chair of the Children’s Oncology Group. Here are a few of the key points from the webinar: Pfizer has received vincristine and has made shipments to hospitals. “Controlled Distribution” of vincristine is currently how Pfizer is distributing the drug which means they will hold a buffer so that no hospital runs out of vincristine and no child should miss a necessary treatment. “Recovery” which means Pfizer should have more than enough vincristine to meet market demand are anticipated as...

Vincristine Shortage Call to Action

Vincristine Shortage Call to Action

From Dean Crowe Vincristine is the most commonly used childhood cancer chemotherapy drug, and it works by stopping the cancer cells from separating into two new cells. Its job is to stop the cancer from growing. And now, because of the shortage, kids are being denied vincristine. The Vincristine Shortage: What You Need to Know On Monday, October 14, 2019 the New York Times reported that there was a shortage of vincristine. https://nyti.ms/2MBtKCM The article stated that the shortage was due to a manufacturing issue that the sole supplier of vincristine in the United States, Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, was experiencing.  The FDA and Pfizer both confirmed the manufacturing issue. That same day, Rally heard from parents that their children were denied vincristine.  One child was told that, even after having his port accessed so vincristine could be administered, he would not be getting the...
