A Name that Makes Me Cringe
I think this is true of just about everyone I know. I know it is true of me. There are just certain names that bring up bad memories. Whether it is a name of someone from way back in the past or maybe someone recently who really upset us or wronged us. When we hear that name, internally we cringe. I have a name that makes me cringe. The name is Sarcoma. It is a nasty type of pediatric and adolescent cancer. July is Sarcoma Awareness Month, so I want to make you aware of why, when I hear this name, it makes me cringe. Unfortunately, Sarcoma has several names and the three most common ones are: 1. Osteosarcoma 2. Ewing’s Sarcoma 3. Rhabdomyosarcoma Osteosarcoma is the most common type of sarcoma and it is a bone cancer. It usually strikes teens and young adults when they experience rapid bone growth and for some reason it is typically found in the leg. The standard treatment involves...
A Letter To My Dad
Dear Dad, Thank you for being a guide in my life. You are possibly the most inspiring person i know. Not only are you an incredible father, one that cares and nourishes, but you have dedicated your life to helping heal others. I am so proud to say that you are not only my hero, but a hero to so many of the people you take care of everyday. I can not wait for a million more memories with you, whether that be traveling as a family, a soccer match, or just another family dinner. During our families, and specifically my toughest time when I battled cancer, you were always there for constant support. All at once you were able to be an amazing, dad, husband, doctor and friend. I feel sometimes I take for granted how great of a father you are, because you have always been this way. But i truly appreciate everything you do for me. Thank you for giving me an amazing life filled with great...

In the United States, cancer is the number one disease killer of children. Yet pediatric cancer isn’t exclusive to America; it’s a global epidemic that affects more than 300,000 children around the world.
Research for Recurrent Brain Tumors Shows Promising Preliminary Results
As a Rally Researcher and the primary investigator at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Gregory Friedman, M.D. is devoted to studying malignant brain tumors in hopes of developing new and improved immunotherapies to treat children with recurrent tumors. One such treatment has shown promising preliminary results, and the therapy involves an unexpected source: the common cold sore virus, otherwise known as herpes simplex or G207. Thanks to Rally Foundation funding, Dr. Friedman and his team were able to alter the virus to kill cancer cells, while also obtaining critical preclinical data needed to conduct a pediatric study. So far, out of seven children, the early results show the therapy to be safe, tolerable and promising. In order to gain a better understanding of his research and the clinical trials, we sat down with Dr. Friedman to find out the following: how pediatric...
