Strong, Kind & Determined to Beat Soft Tissue Cancer: Meet Rally Kid Keren
A vivacious 12-year-old, Rally Kid Keren loves being active and enjoys everything from soccer and swimming to cheering on her favorite Atlanta sports teams. She’s also a bit of a foodie and describes a “Thanksgiving feast” as part of her perfect day. The other important thing to know about Keren? She’s determined not to let her cancer diagnosis slow her down. Back in 2017, Keren developed a growth on her foot that turned out to be rhabdomyosarcoma, a cancerous tumor that occurs in soft tissue. “It was the worst day of my life,” she says of her diagnosis, which took her away from friends, school and her favorite activities. Tough treatments and surgeries followed, ultimately leading to the loss of her leg. Despite the hardships throughout her cancer journey, Keren remains positive and draws support from her parents Kelly and Jonathan, her older brother Jacob, and her younger sister...
Vincristine Shortage – Note To Pediatric Oncologists
Dear Pediatric Oncologists, As I’m sure you’re aware, the vincristine shortage is very real. But what I want you to know is that I am sorry. I know this is hard—hard on the families who can’t get vincristine for their kids, but also hard on you as these precious children’s doctors. My heart breaks for the families and for you. It cannot be easy to look a parent and a child in eye and tell them that they will not be able to get vincristine, the very medicine you told them they needed to save their life. I am sorry. We have failed our children who are fighting cancer, and we have failed you as their doctors. I am still trying to figure out how this has happened in America. The sacrifices you made to become a pediatric oncologist are nothing short of heroic. My son is a first-year neurology resident in Boston, so I’ve seen firsthand (and stand amazed) of what every doctor goes through not...
Vincristine Shortage – Update and Action
To the childhood cancer community: As Chair of the Children’s Oncology Group (COG), I am sending this letter to the childhood cancer community to share information we have related to the current vincristine drug shortage, summarize steps we understand are being taken to help resolve the shortage, and to propose an approach that would benefit from an advocacy effort to help address the ongoing challenge of drug shortages that directly impact children with cancer. Vincristine ShortageAt the beginning of October, pharmacists at COG member institutions raised concerns about the ability to obtain vincristine. COG quickly contacted Pfizer/Hospira, now the sole supplier of vincristine in the United States, and was told that Pfizer/Hospira was experiencing a shortage of drug due to a manufacturing delay. (The other supplier of vincristine in the US, Teva Pharmaceuticals, made a “business...
Your Voice Matters: $6.5 Million in Funding for Cancers in Children, Adolescents and Young Adults
By Dean Crowe They say it takes a village. Thank you all for being our village. You called the U.S. Congressional Offices of the DoD Subcommittee Members asking for specific research funding for cancers in children, adolescents and young adults. You signed the letter of support. You visited and wrote personal emails to those offices as cancer fighters, survivors, caretakers, researchers and advocates. You shared your stories. You applied for grants. You served as consumer reviewers. And your voice mattered. It’s hard to put into words how much your collective voices matter, so we’ll put it into numbers instead. At the end of September, $6.5 million was awarded for 11 research grants for cancers in children, adolescents and young adults from the Department of Defense Cancer Peer Review Program. This brings the total awarded in two years to $9.8 million dollars. We are humbled, we are...
Community Partner Spotlight: Two Pitchers Brewing Company
Rally Foundation for Childhood Research is fortunate to partner with a number of community groups and businesses to help further our mission of raising funds and awareness for childhood cancer research to find better treatments with fewer long-term side effects and, ultimately, cures. This month, we’re shining the spotlight on Two Pitchers Brewing Company, a San Francisco-based brewery specializing in small batch beer blended with quality ingredients. Over the years, Two Pitchers has been incredibly supportive of Rally’s mission, and we wanted to honor and highlight that support by sharing their story. We spoke with the brewery’s co-founder, Tommy Hester, about how the partnership took shape and what it means to be able to support a cause that’s near and dear to their hearts. How did your company first hear about Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer? When Wilson (co-founder) and I...
