July Is Sarcoma and Bone Cancer Awareness Month

by | Jun 30, 2026

July is Sarcoma and Bone Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness for children and families facing these rare and aggressive cancers.

Sarcomas are cancers that develop in the bones or soft tissues of the body. While they account for only a small percentage of cancer diagnoses, they often require intensive treatment and can have devastating impacts on children and their families.

This month, we remember Rally Kid Sarah.

Sarah was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma in 2009 at age 12. Throughout her journey, she faced cancer with remarkable courage, grace and unwavering faith.

She was known for her gentle spirit, kindness and selflessness. Sarah excelled in school, dreamed of working in medicine and cared deeply about helping others. Family and faith were at the center of her life, and even through treatment, relapse and uncertainty, she continued to inspire everyone around her.

Sarah also became a passionate advocate for childhood cancer research, understanding firsthand how desperately children facing cancers like Ewing sarcoma needed better treatment options.

Sarah passed away in October of 2016 at just 19 years old. Today, her legacy continues to inspire Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research’s mission.

Why Research Matters

Sarah’s story reminds us why childhood cancer research cannot wait.

Children facing sarcoma and bone cancers deserve better treatments, fewer long-term side effects and more opportunities for the future. Yet childhood cancer remains significantly underfunded, leaving many promising research ideas without the support needed to move forward.

That is why Rally Foundation invests in innovative research projects, helping scientists pursue discoveries that may one day change outcomes for children diagnosed with cancers like Ewing sarcoma.

One example is the work of Emily Slotkin, M.D., at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. With support from a Rally research grant, Dr. Slotkin studied the genetic driver behind Ewing sarcoma, seeking new ways to target the disease with treatment.

That early-stage research helped generate important discoveries, secure additional funding and advance new therapies into clinical trials. Today, that work is creating new possibilities for patients facing Ewing sarcoma and other rare cancers.

This is the power of philanthropic research funding. Early investments can spark discoveries that lead to larger grants, clinical trials and new treatment options for children who desperately need them.

How You Can Help
