Rally Awards $500,000 in Novel Grants to Eight Childhood Cancer Researchers Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research (Rally) awarded half a million dollars to eight researchers at seven different institutions for Outside the Box novel childhood cancer research ideas. These Outside the Box Grants provide seed funding for brand new ideas that directly address pediatric, adolescent and young adult rhabdomyosarcoma or osteosarcoma as well as red light therapy for neuropathy as a side effect of childhood cancer. “Rally sees itself as philanthropic seed investors in the next great discovery — we like to invest early and are willing to take risks because these Outside the Box ideas may pave the way to finding better treatments and cures,” says Dean Crowe, Founder and CEO. 2024 William Olson Impact Award Winner
ATLANTA – Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research recently announced their 2024 William Olson Impact Award winner, Dr. Gregory Friedman of The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. This prestigious award is given to a doctor who exemplifies commitment, determination, and resilience in caring for kids fighting cancer and discovering new treatments. Each year the Rally Foundation’s Board of Directors selects one Rally-funded researcher to receive the William Olson Impact Award. Dr. Friedman has been a Rally-funded researcher since 2013, and is currently funded to support the bench-to-bedside development of targeted immunotherapies, including clinical trials and laboratory work designed to enhance the therapy further for future trials. PRESS RELEASE: July 19, 2024 Atlanta, Georgia – Dr. Gregory Friedman, Chief of Pediatric Neuro-oncology at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, along with Dr. Pablo Valdes, Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery and the Jeannie Sealy Distinguished Chair in Neuroscience at the University of Texas Medical Branch, and Dr. Joshua Bernstock, a neurosurgeon-scientist at Harvard Medical School and MIT, have recently been awarded a research grant from Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research. What is Infusion?
Your child has been diagnosed with cancer. The doctors have established a plan for treating this cancer. Part of this plan includes infusions. So…what are infusions? Infusion is a big word that really means administering medications directly into a vein, or intravenously (IV). A needle is sometimes inserted into a patient’s hand or arm. This is an efficient delivery system for hydration, antibiotics, blood transfusions, and immunotherapy. As part of your child’s cancer protocol, or treatment plan, chemotherapy is usually included. Chemotherapy drugs are used to destroy cancer cells, and are typically administered by infusion. Chemotherapy can also be used to shrink tumors before surgery or radiation, or to boost the effects of radiation.
