At just two-and-a-half years old, King was diagnosed in June of 2016 with a rare combination of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and G6PD, an enzyme deficiency that is incurable and complicates chemotherapy treatment.

Now five, King is working through a three-and-a-half year treatment plan that consists of daily chemotherapy. This includes 75 pills per month, plus intravenous treatments—all of which have lead to severe complications. The chemo left him unable to walk for months due to vincristine toxicity. It also caused neuropathy, or nerve damage, throughout his body, PTSD, brain swelling (leukoencephalopathy) and painful mouth sores. “The scariest part of his treatment is that it can cause a secondary cancer and lifelong side effects,” shared parents Shameeza and Michael.

Another side effect of King’s cancer? The financial burdens it has placed on the family. Dad Michael left his nursing career to care for King around the clock, while mom Shameeza works full time to support the family.

Regardless of all that he has been through and still experiences, King does his best to enjoy each day and stay positive. He participates in fashion shows and walks to advocate, raise money and spread awareness about childhood cancer. He wants to help other families and find a cure for cancer so no other kid has to go through these toxic treatments.
