We started seeing a white glow at Isadri’s eye, we were in Mexico visiting Family for Christmas, so we took her to a doctor and Isadri was diagnosed with Advanced stage VB Retinoblastoma, a rare eye cancer, for her it was even more rare since this cancer affects 0 to 3 years old kids, she was 8 years old at diagnosis. Worse news ever. We were devastated since she is our only child. We started treatment in Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami, traveling every 2-3 weeks at the time for treatment. Then when her doctor ran out of options, we changed her treatment to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Isadri was in remission for a few months but unfortunately cancer came back in December of 2016, and her right eye had to be enucleated a few days before Christmas. So far Isadri has been super positive and her enthusiasm is boundless. A few weeks ago while in bed ready to sleep she asked me, “Mommy, if you had only one wish what would you wish for?”… of course, my response was that she would never have had cancer and her response was so beautiful… “no mommy, because if I didn’t have cancer then we would not have met all the pilots, volunteers, therapy dogs, doctors, nurses and all the kids at the hospital and the Ronald McDonald House, you have to wish for something else” … So I said, “Okay, then I would wish it would not have taken your beautiful eye” and she said in a bit “Ok, I’ll take that one”… so Isadri only sees the good experiences and the beautiful people that God keep sending our way to make our journey less hard, and which Isadri calls “EARTHLY ANGELS”… she has a beautiful way to live and see life.
Every child who has been diagnosed with childhood cancer inspires us to Rally On to find better treatments with fewer long-term side effects and, ultimately, cures. Please join us in the fight against childhood cancer by making a donation or setting up your own Rally fundraiser today.
