Ballplayers turned oenophiles? Three Braves players release wines for charity

Chipper Jones, Tom Glavine, and Brian McCann have all partnered with Charity Hop and Longball Cellars to release wine that benefits their charity of choice. For each bottle sold, the designated charity will receive $1.25.

The wines, all from Clos LaChance Winery in San Martin, California, are:

Chipper Chardonnay, which benefits The Miracle League

McCann Merlot, benefiting The Rally Foundation For Childhood Cancer Research

and, my favorite...

Cabernet Glavignon, a 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon that benefits CURE Childhood Cancer

So far, the wines are available at Kroger, Wal-Mart, and online, at Event Wines. All are $13 a bottle.

Jones and McCann made an appearance at a launch party for the wine at Turner Field's 755 Club on Monday. When asked if he’s a fan of Chardonnay, Jones told the crowd, “Not so much.” He does, however, like the charcoal portrait of himself (by artist Lauren Creedon) on the bottle’s label: “I look pretty good right there,” he said.

I asked McCann if he got to pick his wine, but as I suspected, the Merlot was just a nice fit with his name. “I’m getting more into the wine scene,” he said, “especially when I go out with some of the older players on the team.” His usual beverage of choice? “Bud Light.”
